Blue in the Sky

A lesbian wife and mother tries her hand at something new. Surely there is a hat that fits out there somewhere!

Ok, so the economy is going to hell in a handbasket and we might just be in a Depression by Monday, but I’m going on vacation!!!!!  Yahoo!  So before I depart I wanted to send a shout out to the musicians that I am most eager to hear at the festival.  Proceeding from left to right, they are:

  • Patty Griffin
  • Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes fame)
  • Gillian Welch (she’s the one that’s not Emmylou Harris)
  • Okkervil River
  • Jenny Lewis
  • Beck
  • Vampire Weekend

So Much to Say Wednesday September 24, 2008

It’s been so long since I’ve blogged, that I don’t know where to start.  In fact, not knowing where to start is actually contributing to my lack of blogging.  This makes no sense.  And it stops now.  I’ve decided to do what I usually do when I’m not sure where to start.  Make a list.  With bullets.  So, here are a few things that have happened since the last time.

  • We got married!!!!!  It was beautiful and perfect and fabulous and overall quite a good thing.  There were friends and family and music and food and love and cake and lots of pictures.  I will be sharing pictures very soon.
  • Toad FINALLY took the board exam she has been studying for for months.  Go Toad!  That girl is really something.
  • We finished writing (and actually mailing) our thank you notes.  Susan and Holly have taught us well.
  • We have been getting unprecedented amounts of sleep.
  • I got to see Bella and her parents and her grandparents.
  • Toad has officially adopted Gadget (in an email conversation btw the two of us while we were both at work – quite a ceremony) so that we can avoid the use of the word “step-son”.  At long last, Gadget finally has two mommies.
  • My students collectively bombed their first exam and inspired an impressive volcano of anger that drove my wedding cake laden self straight to the treadmill.  Maybe students aren’t so bad after all….
  • I have a wife now.  Did I mention that?
  • My parents spent some time with Toad’s parents at their new house on their way back to Mississippi.
  • Fall has arrived and I am pretty blissed out by the whole thing.  Windows are open, leaves are falling and that fall smell is in the air.  I LOVE it!  I’m in heaven.
  • We are on the last season of Six Feet Under and I am starting to miss the Fishers already.
  • This weekend (actually starting tmw) we are going to Austin, TX!  I have never been there and I am pumped.  We are going for Austin City Limits and will be staying with family friends.  There is sure to be lots of music and walking and tex-mex and beer and sun and snuggling and at least one margarita.
  • I’m reading a great book called Shantaram.  It is one of the those super long stories that pulls you in and kind of takes you over.  My book club talked about the first 500 pages last night and it was a great discussion.  Lots of talk of culture and faith and goodness and love.  The important stuff.  Making me want to go to India more than I already do.   And eat lots of Indian food.  That too.
  • I married the most beautiful person I’ve ever met.

I Really MUST Get my Emotions Under Control

Filed under: Wedding Planning — The Professor @ 6:21 pm

Ok, so everyone knows that a wedding stirs up all sorts of things.  This is one of those things that people talk about, but I am here to testify…….. IT IS TRUE PEOPLE!!  It is really true.  The people that say those things?  They are not kidding.

Without divulging too much information I will share that like every good lesbian with a TIVO, I recorded Ellen today.  Today was the day that she promised to share pictures and stories from her recent (legal!!!) wedding to Portia de Rossi.  I hit play, sat back for the brief segment of the show that she discussed it and just cried.  Absolutely beautiful.

I wish I could find a better link to share, but here is the link to the page on her website that will play this clip from the show.  It’s not too long,  but it’s really beautiful.  Check it out.  And in case you’re trying to decide if it’s worth your time…… Ellen is from Mississippi.  Nuf said.  😉

So Toad’s Mom and I have been scanning pictures for the wedding.  It’s entirely too much to handle.  Here are three of my favorites.

You Know Stress Levels are High When…. Monday September 1, 2008

suddenly everything in your house has a label.  Toad has been on call all weekend and that has meant much work and little wedding task accomplishment or board study.  This afternoon she got home and her pockets were filled with very tiny little labels.  I know you can’t see (in spite of my cropping attempts), but the small white rectangle on Gadget’s dish reads “Gadgets Grub”.  (in case he forgets and suddenly develops the ability to read)  Toad was eager to inform me that between cases she found a label maker and it made her entire weekend.  When life gets out of hand, grab your label maker!  You do have some measure of control after all!!
