Blue in the Sky

A lesbian wife and mother tries her hand at something new. Surely there is a hat that fits out there somewhere!

Last Sunday we took Bean to church for the first time.  It was great to get out of the house and into a familiar groove.  Our new friends were excited to meet the boy and it was super fun to show him off.  I was relieved that he spent the entire service quietly snoozing in his bucket.  Perfect!  Later that afternoon, Jess came by to meet Bean.  She was in town visiting a friend from college and we were excited that she wanted to drop by to meet our little man.

Toad and I celebrated our two year wedding anniversary on Monday.  Actually, we celebrated our anniversary with Bean.  This was pretty appropriate as the primary reason that we decided to do the whole wedding thing was bc we wanted to create a family.  We knew early on that we planned to be together in a long-term commitment kind of way and that we wanted to have a child/children, but we didn’t want the weight of our own families coming to terms with these things to fall on our child.  So, the major impetus for having a wedding in the very traditional way that we did was to cement the realness of our relationship within our own families in an effort to work out some of the kinks before a baby came along.

The three of us went our for a beer on the patio of one of our favorite new spots and then headed down the road to pick up sushi.  Bean hung out in his bouncy seat beside the couch while Toad and I gobbled up lots of delicious sushi.  We also got to watch our boy Raffa Nadal win the US Open in the background.  A perfect night!

The next few days were quiet ones with Toad going in to work now and then for interviews with potential Fellows.  The big happening in Bean-land was the advent of Monkey Island.  This is a little ADD preparation tool that most people refer to as a play mat.  Although we weren’t sure if he was ready for this kind of thing, he ate it right up.  Although I can’t help but think that it’s a ridiculous amount of stimulation, it’s fun to watch him take it all in.

On Thursday we hit the road for our first family road trip to Toad’s parents house.  After lots of thought and packing lists, we managed to get all four of us on the road in a fairly efficient fashion.  It looks like Bean is a pretty happy little traveler.  Although we did have to stop for feedings, we made it to the grandparents house without too much fuss.  Go us!

We loved spending the long weekend with Grandpa and Muzzy.  There was lots of baby holding and talking and lots and lots of smiling.  It is unbelievably exciting to watch someone fall in love with your child.  Heady stuff for sure.

During this visit, we were also able to drive to Asheville to meet friends at the finish of the Blue Ridge Relay.  This is a race that Toad ran shortly before our wedding two years ago. Happily, the Grabs were also on that team and this is when our friendship with them began.  Although Toad wasn’t able to run this year, it was great to be able to see everyone and show off our little Bean.

We also had lots of fun introducing Bean to one of our favorite towns.  Asheville is where we met and so it’s pretty special to us.  I’m not sure how much he was able to absorb ;), but walking around that town with our baby was fabulous.

By the time we got home on Sunday night we were exhausted, but happy.
